About VehicleMD

What VehicleMD Is

VehicleMD is a free pre-purchase vehicle health tool. You enter a year, make, model, and mileage, and it returns a health report: a 0 to 100 score, known recalls from NHTSA, the most common owner complaints, typical issues for that generation, a fair market value range, and a Buy, Buy with Caution, or Avoid verdict. You can then chat with an AI advisor about the specific vehicle.

The goal is narrow: help someone walking into a used-car conversation know what to ask, what to inspect, and roughly what the vehicle is worth. It is not a replacement for a mechanic and it does not pretend to be.

Who We Are

VehicleMD is built and operated by a small independent team based in Colorado. We are not a dealership, not a broker, not an inspection service, and not affiliated with any vehicle manufacturer. No one pays us to steer you toward or away from a vehicle. The tool is free to use and has no accounts, no logins, and no upsells.

How We Built This

Every report combines three inputs. Recall and complaint data comes directly from the U.S. government's NHTSA API. Fuel economy and ownership cost ranges are derived from EPA data. The narrative analysis, scoring, and verdict are AI-generated, constrained to a strict JSON schema and validated before being shown.

Reports are cached anonymously by vehicle specifications, not by user, and expire after 30 days. We do not track who runs a report, and we do not store VINs, license plates, or location data. A full breakdown of scoring and data sources lives on our methodology page.

What We Don't Do

VehicleMD does not physically inspect vehicles. It does not pull VIN history, title records, accident reports, or odometer readings. It does not give professional automotive, financial, or legal advice. A report is a starting point for a buyer, not a verdict on a specific car sitting in a driveway.

Always have a vehicle you are considering inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchase. A VehicleMD report helps you walk in prepared. It does not replace hands, eyes, and a lift.
